I actually heard with my own ears many years ago while airborne. It went something like this:

"Lafayette approach, Cessna November 9877."
Lafayette approach: "Cessna 877, go ahead."
Cessna 9877: "Lafayette approach, Cessna November 9877 is 15 miles south of Lafayette, northbound at 1,000 feet."
Lafayette approach: "Cessna 877, say intentions".
Cessna 9877 after a long pause: "To become a private pilot".
