I was on SW Flt 44 last night (Jan.14th) departing from Dallas to San Antonio at 6:30PM.
Upon takeoff, after the front wheels had just left the ground, we heard a loud bang followed immediately by fast pulsing sound, which slowed graduatioally within about 5 seconds (like the sound a tire makes when it blows and buzzes as it slows down).
The pilot immediately slowed down so the wheels came back to the ground and he applied the brakes to come to a long stop fortunately with enough runway left.
He said he would remain stopped until the fire dept. arrived to inspect it, and he said something about an engine compressor.
After about 45 mins. the plane was towed back to the terminal and were routed to another plane at a different gate, and some of the passengers on the original flight told me they were sitting on the left side of the plane behind the engine, and had seen the engine explode with a bright red flash and fire emitting from the left engine.
